Sustainable packaging

We consider metal packaging to keep its leading position in the future. Apart from providing the consumers with food safety, convenience and being a cost efficient packaging it also has some environmental advantages compared to other packaging materials.

Metal packaging has no equal alternative when it comes to sustainability.

1. Metal consists of some of the natural resources that are most common in the ground. Steel is gained from iron ore (4th most frequent occurrence) and coal. Aluminium is gained from bauxite (3rd most frequent occurrence).

2. Metal retains its original material properties during the recycling process.

3. And is 100% recyclable – which means that there are no waste and waste sub-stances in the recycling process as with plastics or paper/cardboard.

4. Therefore the material can be recycled again and again.

5. High recycling rates: Sheet metal 69 per cent – Aluminium 62 per cent (Figures for Europe, 2006).

6. With a relatively low level of material consumption, the barrier properties of metal packaging.

7. Provides the consumer with food safety – 100 per cent air and light-tight.

8. Requires no secondary packaging

9. Contributes to extending product lifetime – reduces thereby food wastage by 50 per cent in developing countries and up to 20 per cent in other parts of the world.

10. Requires minimum energy consumption during transport and storage at home - does not require any refrigeration or freezer storage.

Further metal packaging gives a more natural preservation with no or limited use of additives which maintains minerals and vitamins throughout processing thus providing high quality and unchanged nutrition value.
