New carbon footprint calculation model – a valuable tool

A new calculation model can help our customers identify how various factors influence their overall carbon footprint.

G&M has implemented the new calculator – but always supported
by relevant consulting services.

The European joint organisation of rigid metal packaging producers, EMPAC, has in collaboration with TNO developed the EMPAC SCORECARD online system.
The new calculation model is based on the Life Cycle
Analysis (LCA) principle and makes it possible to calculate
carbon emissions from metal packaging produced in Europe measured from the extraction of the raw material to final delivery of the metal packaging at the customer,
including the share of packaging being recycled in metal production.

Calculating a customer’s packaging

In order to calculate the carbon footprint of a specific customer’s packaging, we can vary three key factors in the carbon emissions, i.e.:
• the specific weight of the customer’s can
• the actual recycling rate for metal packaging and
• the transport distance between ourselves and the customer.

We can perform the calculations within the following metal packaging categories: food cans, aerosols, general line, speciality/decorative cans and lids.
This enables us to provide our customers with input on the carbon footprint of their packaging which they can use for their overall carbon calculation.

LCA with reservation

At Glud & Marstrand, we interpret LCA analyses with considerable caution. We often use the analyses for comparisons, and here it is vital to acknowledge that carbon footprint measurements are only comparable if the analyses are based on exactly
the same method and analysis framework.

Glud & Marstrand therefore only uses recognised environmental calculators, always supplemented by
personal consulting for our customers in relation to the conditions and any special circumstances regarding the specific analysis.

Sustainable Packaging

Metal is not only 100% recyclable, it is in principle infinitely recyclable as you can keep recycling the same...
