Sony Computer Entertainment is the first to use SteelBook™ metal media box – a revolutionary new packaging launched by Danish packaging manufacturer Glud & Marstrand and the Danish distributor of media packaging, Scanavo.
Sony chose SteelBook™ metal media box for a Collector's Edition of the popular and high-profile game "Killzone". Only 30,000 copies are released of the Collector's edition that comes with a bonus disc and includes a soundtrack and a making of documentary.
Only three DVD packaging solutions have ever been approved by Sony Computer Entertainment with SteelBook™ metal media box as the most recent as it offers a unique solution that can differentiate media products in a complex market.
SteelBook™ metal media box has given the special edition added value thanks to its eyecatcher effect, durability, and above all an enhanced feeling of quality. The hard to imitate packaging also helps protect Sony Computer Entertainment from product piracy.
SteelBook™ metal media box was designed and developed by the R&D department at Glud & Marstrand to illustrate the versatility and potential of metal packaging. Like other types of metal packaging SteelBook™ metal media box can use sophisticated decoration techniques. For instance, the main picture on the Killzone packaging is a warrior whose eyes glow intensely thanks to the metal.
The reason for developing SteelBook™ metal media box was an alarming gap in the media packaging market. Until now it has not been possible to find packaging that matched the DVDs' sophisticated contents, so the physical product in cardboard and plastic packaging did not match the price.
Glud & Marstrand accepted the challenge and worked on the project for two years before launching SteelBook™ metal media box. They then teamed up with Scanavo which distributes and markets SteelBook™ metal media box.
