Cake tins for Copenhagen’s home baking in the 1880’s, “Madam Blå” for the home-brewed coffee in the 1930’s and oval cans for one of Denmark’s greatest export successes, ham. There is a common theme running through all these examples. The theme is quality, creativity and flexibility. Through 120 years Glud & Marstrand have proved that these qualities are important when a company aims at achieving and holding on to success.
Today, Glud &Marstrand is a modern and innovative company, which is improving its position on the world market. This is achieved by focusing on creativity, quality and long-term relationships.
|
Glud & Marstrand was founded in Copenhagen in 1879 when plumber, Poul Glud started producing metal goods for household use with hardware dealer Troels Marstrand.
The partnership quickly became a success and the company developed a broad range of items. Customers could choose from buckets, casseroles, petroleum lamps, heaters, stoves and much more. At the end of the 1880’s production was expanded to include tinplate toys. Among the early products the enamelled kitchenware with the GM logo became popular with the well-known ‘Madam Blå’ coffee pot leading the way – still a collectors item even in modern households.
In the 1950’s customers started to buy increasing amounts of metal packaging. The market grew, and following a period with several changes in the product range, company addresses and ownerships G&M took an important step into the growing market by beginning a technical collaboration with the American Can Company.
|
Ownership changed yet again in 1981 – but this time the change was of long-term significance. A long period of cutbacks and capital drain had reduced G&M’s ability to act in the market. Following the bankruptcy of the former owner, the B&W corporation, G&M was taken over by the LEGO company, Kirkbi A/S.
The new ownership meant that it again was possible for G&M to carry out the necessary and much needed investments in modern technology and new products. At the same time the company expanded by buying some of Scandinavia’s largest suppliers of metal packaging. The purchases of Hüttel Packaging in Hedensted (DK), PLM Haustrup in Odense (DK) and PLM Lysekil in Sweden formed the base on which G&M today has a leading position in the market for metal packaging.
In 2003 Glud & Marstrand purchased those of Skanem’s divisions that produced metal packaging. These divisions are situated in Skive and Hjallerup (DK).
|
The ability to identify new demands and solutions is central to G&M. By recognising customer demands before others, G&M will keep its world leading position in the market for metal packaging. In order to stay first, G&M established 2 new departments in the late 90’s, VISIGN and the Corporate Technical Centre. VISIGN was established in 1996 and the Corporate Technical Centre started in 1997.
In these departments a team of highly trained and skilled technical and marketing staff identify and interpret new market trends. This knowledge forms the base of new packaging solutions and production methods.
